เรคยาวิก เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศไอซ์แลนด์ และเป็นเมืองหลวงที่ตั้งอยู่ใกล้กับขั้วโลกเหนือมากที่สุด โดยตั้งอยู่ไม่ไกลจากเส้นอาร์กติกเซอร์เคิลมากนัก ทำเลที่ตั้งอยู่ทางด้านตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศไอซ์แลนด์ ด้านมุมล่างของอ่าว Faxaflói ซึ่ง Ingolfur Arnarson ชาวนอร์ดิค เป็นผู้อพยพคนแรกที่มาตั้งรกรากที่เรคยาวิกในปี พ.ศ. 1413 เมื่อเรคยาวิกกลายเป็นเมืองที่เป็นศูนย์กลางทางการค้าและธุรกิจการประมง จึงได้มีการก่อตั้งให้เป็นเมืองหลวงในปี พ.ศ. 2329 ปัจจุบันเขตเมืองมีประชากรประมาณ 120,000 คน ประกอบด้วย 7 เทศบาลนครซึ่งรวมเทศบาลนครเรคยาวิกด้วย
